抗日战争时期，内蒙古草原上的青年猎手胡合、加米扬和张玉喜因打击日寇被蒙奸官布逮捕。张玉喜在越狱时被打伤。他临死前要胡合去加入游击队，并将女儿小玲托付给他。胡合将小玲交给母亲，忍痛辞别怀孕的妻子秀芝，上了大青山。秀芝也被迫离开草原，与丈夫失去联系。十多年后，草原解放，胡合回到家乡担任区委书记。小玲在胡合的母亲死后由拉西宁布抚养成人，并改名娜布其。
